Metric exists at several fascinating intersections — where the underground bisects the commercial and where electro-pop converges with alt rock, new wave, and trip-hop. Built around the core of vocalist/synth player Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw, the outfit has managed to hold onto a loyal kernel of cool left field devotees while sending several tracks to prime-time TV — the livid, fizzing "Monster Hospital" has made an appearance in [i]Grey's Anatomy[/i] and [i]CSI: Miami[/i]. This primer collection features excellent tracks from three albums and swerves into some of Haines' piano-led solo cuts, as well as a collaboration with Broken Social Scene ("Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl").
