Comment:

Tiny though it is, Jamaica cranks out more records per capita than any other country in the world, so it’s no massive shock that Bob Marley was beaten to the U.S. Pop charts. Desmond Dekker, his whooping falsetto lofting over a bass riff that hobbles with a peg-leg sailor’s gait, scored reggae’s first Top 10 single with “Israelites.” In many ways, Marley had more in common with America’s socially conscious soul masters than he did with the locals. Marvin Gaye shared Marley’s vision of a troubled society torn by race and class in “What’s Going On”; and like Marley, he believed in the healing power of love as the ultimate salvation. And Sly & The Family Stone’s soul-power anthem “Stand!” embodied Marley’s fist-in-the-air rebelliousness from “Get Up, Stand Up.” But these selections represent only part of the treasure; the deeper you dig, the more you uncover.
