Comment:

In the quarter-century since his death, Marley’s influence has expanded outward like the petals of a lotus flower, far beyond his extended family and former mates. In fact, it reaches way past reggae itself. Marley mania swept through the U.K. just before the Clash hurled its first Molotov cocktail-on-wax out of Brixton, and underclass fury burns bright and righteous in their genre-bending, put-the-boot-in stomp “Rudie Can’t Fail.” Bono ascends the altar and delivers the sermon of his life in U2’s magnificent “One,” as the Edge’s guitar chimes out like a cathedral bell above the desperate plea echoing Marley’s message of compassion and mercy. And Lily Allen’s bass-heavy alt-smash breakthrough, “Smile,” lurches and jerks with a reggae beat under her sharp-tongued, honey-and-dagger vocal. Marley’s legacy didn’t stop there — it mushroomed out across continents and styles, as you’ll hear.
