As you wander towards the shore this summer, iPod in hand, please have a kind thought for your forebears, for whom the lo-fi transistor radio was the only portable listening device. Even then, they were at the mercy of limited AM radio station playlists. In the early '60s, before the Civil Rights Act, many white kids couldn't see (or hear) R&B artists in their hometowns, but beach clubs along the mid-Atlantic coast (particularly in Myrtle Beach, SC) provided not only jukeboxes well-stocked with R&B and early soul, but also a place for those performers to play live. Blue-eyed soul, Motown, jump blues, and obscure R&B tracks screamed out of speakers 24/7, all summer long. The tradition has persisted, waxing and waning over the years, and now an entire class of R&B/soul has come to be known as "beach music."
