Corporate Rock - School of Rock: Classic Rock, Vol. 3
Comment:
Unjustly slapped with the epithet “corporate rock,” arena-packing bands like Kansas and Boston and Toto were torpedoed in the press for committing the ultimate sin of sounding too “commercial,” as if Krazy Glue-catchy melodies and hooks fat enough to strip whale flesh, all cranked up to Saturday night proportions, weren’t the ingredients of the very best kind of rock. Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” splits the sound barrier, guitars screaming at Mach 4 as Steve Perry pays megawatt homage to his turbocharged girlfriend, who “loves the lovin’ things.” Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian,” in time-honored power ballad fashion, tiptoes onto the stage before exploding in a sonic extravaganza worthy of a Wagnerian opera finale. And the choppy piano riff in Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice” points an accusing finger as lead singer Lou Gramm struts in like the prosecuting DA, while the band’s backing-vocal chorus plays judge and jury. But don’t stop here: From the Starship to Genesis, discover why fans raved (and critics raged).
