Power Ballads - School of Rock: Classic Rock, Vol. 3
Comment:
The lights dim, the piano ripples beneath the singer’s aching plea, and the drummer, sticks poised, takes a final breath before dropping the 16-ton hammer that can signify only one thing — the power ballad. Drenched in cavernous echo that blows singer Kevin Cronin’s multitracked harmonies up to Tabernacle Choir size, REO Speedwagon’s "Keep On Loving You" captures the power ballad’s signature magic trick: intimacy in front of 75,000 fans. Styx singer Dennis DeYoung propels Kleenex sales to an all-time high in “Babe,” announcing his impending departure and delivering the sentiment-packed coup de grace that mists every female eye in the house: “Babe, I love you.” And songwriter Jim Steinman provides scenery-chewing collaborator Meat Loaf with "Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad," an epic mini-drama in which our brokenhearted balladeer employs his outsize personality’s persuasive powers to convince his ladyfriend to engage in a loveless tryst. But don't stop exploring here; many more Bic lighters await hoisting.
