Comment:

Forget about his doofus ex-wife. Forget about his Republican House career. Forget about his undignified death. Forget about his cheesy persona. Forget about that goofy-ass show. Forget about his dreadful tv appearances. But for the love o' Pete, remember him for the music. A few years ago, my friend Ed and Ben Vaughn put together a great Sonny tribute disc, "Bonograph: Sonny gets his Share." A lot of our friends' bands appeared on it, and indeed, some of them are featured prominently on this disc. I've included some of Sonny's original recordings, some covers by others that made him a few bucks, some songs on Bonograph that made him no money, and a handful of mega-hits with that famous ex of his. This is Sonny the songcrafter, the right-hand man of Phil "Psycho" Spector, the goofball sidekick of Ms. "Believe", herself. Know Bono, love Bono, BE BONO. Sonny Bono - rock hero. Personal note: my first concert ever was Sonny & Cher at age 7, I think. It changed me forever. This cd is a work in progress. (But ain't they all?) By the way, if I were so inclined, I'd believe that I was predestined to make this mix: "I got you babe" was #1 on the day I was born.

Yes! I see selections from Inner Views including Pammies on a Bummer. Thankfully you didn't include Vanilla Fudge's nine versions of The Beat Goes On from the album of the same name. I have always thought someone should combo The Velvet's Lady Godiva's Operation with The Beat Goes On. It works in my head. My monkey brain thinks that way.

Nice collection Sean. I was lucky enough to meet the man when he visited the newspaper I worked for about 10 years ago. One of my few brushes with greatness. A photo I took of him on that day still hangs on our refrigerator.

Nice pick by the Frampton Bros. Nancy Sinatra does a mean "Bang Bang" too.

Incidentally, "Joy to the World" was #1 on the day that I was born... although the sentiment seems fitting, I haven't felt the urge to make a Three Dog Night mix. Perhaps you could do so while figuring out a way to put the Framptons on the mix... heh.

A fine example of pro bono work. For volume two, would you consider Tiny Tim singing both parts on "I Got You Babe"?

No Rob, I won't be posting a Three Dog Night comp any time soon, but I'd wager that it would be a damn site better than any Leonard Skinner mix. Heh. I kill me. As for the shameless inclusion of the Frampton Brothers track (YES, THAT'S MY DAMNED BAND), I really like the violin part. And the vocals are certainly Bono-esque. But you know, if your own band isn't one of your favorite bands, you're probably in the wrong band. Pro-bono, indeed!

Hey, Sean--you need to know something--I had not seen this mix when I put "The Revolution Kind" on the "45 RPM" mix I posted tonight (5/2). This is a very cool mix--I've been a proud owner of Bonograph since soon after it's release. BTW, the #1 song the day I was born was "Help Me Rhonda." The day I turned 18 it was "Flashdance...What a Feeling."

Updated to add more Sonny, Cher, etc. - removed some of the covers by newer artists in favor of others.

Sean -- good mix, but that last notion is a bit troubling. You see, the number one song on the day that I was born was "Annie's Song" by John Denver. I sure hope I'm not predestined to put together a John Denver mix for this thing. ;-)
