Comment:

An 80-minute belated tribute to the great Fred Neil, one of the most overlooked singer-songwriters of the 60's, who passed away last July after spending his last 30 years holed up in Coconut Grove, FL, with little or no contact to the outside world (popular myth has him composing scores for and serenading his beloved dolphins, but there's not much verification there). If you haven't heard of him, I guarantee you've heard at least one of the songs he wrote that were hits for other artists--"Little Bit of Rain", "Blues on the Ceiling", "The Dolphins", "The Other Side of This Life", or, most likely, "Everybody's Talkin'". In the case of almost every one of those songs (*every* one, if you ask me), his version remains definitive. Few people could sing surrealist folk-blues as well as Fred; few even bother to try anymore.

Ahh, Fred Niel. I, like many others was exposed to him via other peoples versions. Then I heard the originals. A good song can make you late for work. A great song can make you quit your job. Neil is one of a handful that has made me think those thoughts. I love Blues on The Ceiling. Great job.
