Comment:
Dennis Wilson: Super Genius. That's the theme of this disc. NOTE: THIS IS NOT ANOTHER BEACH BOYS MIX. Most of the songs here that bear the "Beach Boys" label were Dennis' solo productions that were submitted to the group as finished recordings. With the exception of the Brian-penned "In the Back of My Mind" (which has such an unbelievable Dennis vocal performance that I had to include it), all of these tunes were at least co-written by Dennis; all but "Steamboat", "4th of July" and "Only with You" are sung by Dennis (he gave those three tracks to his almost equally gifted brother Carl to sing). Although this was partially inspired by reading the recent "Dumb Angel" biography, it was more inspired by the long-standing admiration I've had for the man since re-discovering the Beach Boys in general (and discovering for the first time the value of their post-"Smile" work) back in '93. It sucks that truly evil jackasses like Mike Love attempted to jealously run Dennis and his songs out of the band while denigrating him as some sort of "idiot savant". Perhaps someday he'll get his just due. In the meantime, this is all I can do for him.Feedback:
I love Dennis - this is brilliant!
Great work, Rob!
Great work, Rob!
This is great! The post "Smile" work is sadly overlooked (especially "Sunflower", "Surfs Up", and "Love You".) However, the song "Never Learn Not To Love" was actually written by Charles Manson (and given to Dennis as a gift while Charlie and members of "The Family" were residing in Dennis' mansion. The original song title is "Cease To Exist" (a performance by C. Manson and some "Family" members may be found on a collection of his songs entitled "Lie".)
well done, once again, Rob
Wow! This made me go back and listen to the three tracks on here that I have. Beautiful stuff. Can you keep me in mind for a future trade when you've had a chance to catch your breath?
I'm aware of that, WidneyKid. Dennis, however, purchased the rights to the song from Manson *and* changed the lyrics slightly (I have Manson's version, as well as Redd Kross' cover). This infuriated Manson, as is well documented. Manson also co-wrote "Be With Me", although, once again, he was not credited.
love from me to you;-) wonderful, what do you think of "Carry me home" that Dennis song that Primal scream covered once?
Wow this is great! Very, very well done Rob.
very nice rob...are you on holidays or something at the moment, you're making fantabulous mixes at a ridiculously fast past mon cher!
Mike Love, not war.
This is lovely, Rob.
This looks really great. Nice one, Rob!
Ah...it's a relief to see you share my assessment of Mike Love. :-)
oh i think i really need this soon, it's still damn hot here in sweden and a dose of this would make me love the sun more, so if you got any spare time check out my mixes and see if we can make a trade
If you are ever willing to do another trade with me, I'd really love a copy of this.
I've got all of these songs now and I'm assembling this disc myself. I might post my assessment here at a later date. :-)
