Concealed beneath that familiar gold lamé exterior, crushed beneath the weight of his mountain of hits, lurks a whole other Elvis, crying out to be heard. On “My Happiness” Presley strips down to an acoustic guitar and his buttermilk-smooth vocals, before plunging into a time tunnel and emerging at the crossroads where Bing Crosby meets Rudy Vallee. A different kind of intimacy envelops this alternate version of “In the Ghetto,” as Elvis pierces straight to the heart with a surgeon’s precision: no gospel choir, no flamboyant orchestra, just the subdued elegance of a sympathy card delivered to a grieving mother after a tragic loss. And he executes a 180-degree turn on “When It Rains, It Really Pours,” selling his blues-rockin’ woes with the intensity of a revival-tent preacher trolling for souls to save.
