Comment:

These are the cuts in which Elvis ratcheted the throttle back a few notches, dimmed the lights, and poured his voice over the tunes like maple syrup on a short stack. With its loping, horse-hoof beat and falsetto higher than a beehive hairdo, his version of Rodgers & Hart’s “Blue Moon” pushes his youthful vocal’s emotions to the limit, like a developing superhero testing his newfound powers. But with “Don’t Cry Daddy,” it’s our emotions that get the workout, as his intentionally understated performance allows the heart-tugging lyrics to target our tear ducts without descending into schmaltz. And building from a simple piano-and-vocal launch to a Wagnerian orchestral thunderclap finale, Elvis transports Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” into an exotic place where power ballads and hymns meet. It’s all the power at half the tempo, and there are plenty more where these came from.
