Comment:

From rockabilly’s creation to nationwide sensation, Elvis’ world teemed with artists tapping parallel musical wellsprings, dreaming of a Presley-sized payoff. As the snare snaps a couple of rapid-fire rim-shots like a track judge’s starting gun, Bill Haley counts off the last seconds of adult culture’s reign in “Rock Around the Clock,” a bass-thumpin’ wedge of jumpin’ jive that defies you to stay off the dance floor. After Elvis topped the charts with his “Blue Suede Shoes,” Carl Perkins revisited the wardrobe for “Put Your Cat Clothes On,” a breakneck-paced, piano-pounding boogie-woogie jam. And Tony Joe White’s swampy bayou baritone on “Polk Salad Annie” wrapped so much gator-chompin’ mojo around its core that Presley adopted the 1969 hit for himself. As you’ll discover with the rest of our Similar Sounds, you don’t have to be a hell-fired son of the South to channel Elvis — but it sure helps.
