John Lennon
Comment:
John Lennon, especially in comparison to his fellow bandmates, maintained a tough-guy facade, but a sentimental streak coursed broad and deep through his veins. The leather-jacket-clad singer poses on the cover of Rock 'N' Roll as if stepping out of a pre-Beatlemania time warp, and his echo-drenched cover of Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lula" rumbles with the horsepower of a souped-up Deuce Coupe — with affection, not irony, in the driver's seat. On the introspective "Old Dirt Road," he wistfully examines his increasingly chaotic life under a microscope, likening it to "trying to shovel smoke with a pitchfork in the wind." But on "Real Love," Lennon emerges from a half-decade of self-imposed silence, realizing that his occasionally turbulent relationship with Yoko was the anchor he had so desperately sought all along.
