Listen to the acoustic strummings and honeyed vocals of "Home," from Duncan Sheik's self-titled debut album, and you might get the idea that this singer-songwriter is firmly ensconced in traditional folk sounds. Then check out "Varying Degrees of Con-Artistry," with its spare piano, lush orchestrations, and ironic lyrics, and it's clear that, for Sheik, tradition is only a building block in his larger sonic project. By the time you get to his collaborations with playwright-poet Steven Sater —"Totally F***d"from [i]Spring Awakening[/i] (featuring future [i]Glee[/i] star Lea Michele) — he's already shattered convention to mark himself as an artist unlike any other.
