Comment:

While social criticism was Ochs' calling card, he occasionally threw off the straitjacket of protest songs. Who could have guessed that one of his most appealing and upbeat tunes would find its genesis in a mid-19th century poem — Edgar Allan Poe's "The Bells" — that he set to music? But he returns to familiar territory in "Pretty Smart on My Part," the leadoff track from Rehearsals for Retirement, which weds right-wing paranoid delusion and twisted revenge fantasy in a strangely cheerful setting. And as if to prove that left-wingers could be just as paranoid as their conservative counterparts, "The Confession (Demo Version)" drags us into a generic jail interrogation room, as bad-guy cops browbeat suspects, seeking mere evidence — not truth.
