It’s only right to honor those who came before, but tradition can be tricky for artists who fail to view it through the lens of their own unique talents. That’s a trap that Oakland trio Tony! Toni! Toné!, and the group’s cofounder Raphael Saadiq, neatly sidestepped as they brought fresh ears and a flair for innovation to the sounds they grew up on. So if the group’s debut hit, “Little Walter,” gives a big nod to the gospel services of their youth, the snap of its new jack swing sends it straight to the streets and clubs. On his own, Saadiq brought that genius for melding past and present to everything from quirky neo-soul standouts (“Still Ray”) to crucial hip-hop collaborations (“What They Do” with the Roots), to dazzling, twice-as-nice duets (“I Found My Everything” with Mary J.
