If You Like 50 Cent
Comment:
Taken from his new album Curtis, “I Get Money” is 50 Cent’s return to lyrical dominance but his bold proclamation “I run New York” wouldn’t be realized without the foundation set by rap’s original renegades. Just-Ice and Schoolly D were originators of the gangsta rap style. Rakim set the high watermark for lyrical complexity back in the ‘80s. The Blastmaster KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions escalated beef to fine form on “South Bronx.” Brooklyn’s Lil Mama (“Lip Gloss”) represents the future while the golden era classic “Top Billin’” by the Audio Two is more than just the sample source for “I Get Money”; Milk and Gizmo Dee sum up a semester of street economics in one line: “I get the papers so I don’t care.”
