A tribute to my all-time favorite guitar player, bar none - the reason I started playing guitar. Two nights ago I saw him play a small club and I was blown away. Actually, I've never been so nervous before seeing a show since my teens - I was just thrilled to see Dave perform in such an intimate setting. And did he rock. Good lord, what a loud, rocking show. It was also a better selection of songs than I'd ever seen the Kinks play! After the show, I had a chance to meet the guy - what an incredible sweetheart. He still holds out hope for a Kinks reunion, perhaps to coincide with the upcoming 40th anniversary. This mix compiles much of his early work with the Kinks - some covers, some demos, some singles under his own name. He wrote some fine songs after this period, most notably on his new record "Bug", but they don't fit in with this mix sound-wise. Say what you want about Dave - he was the soul of the Kinks. Plus, along with Link Wray and Chuck Berry - the man invented rock n roll guitar. He realized that it ain't about notes - it's about feel.Feedback:
A great tribute, Sean!
Lovely, Lallo. Glad to hear the show was great... sorry I couldn't make it...
Milk Cow Blues great song.
Excellent! Wish I could have been at that show, must have been an incredible experience!
By the way, I thought Wreckless Eric was the reason you started playing guitar... ;-)
wrecles eric is in prison now, right?
i like your opener! milk cow blues is on my dairy mix. very nice compelation, with good picks all round.
fantastic mix, sean. thank god there are some artists from that era that don't make you cringe when you see them (the stones were on tv last night for riding a blimp as part of some promo they were doing - yuck).
Last I heard, Eric was still performing on a semi-regular basis. My wife has a musician friend who hung out with him a year or two ago. According to Eric's website, he had a show last night.
great mix, Sean. The Kinks were one of my first favourite bands. Back in the days when everybody else was listening to Adam and the ants and Duran Duran!
Great stuff. I also heard that Wreckless Eric was still around, performing - maybe it was in Uncut?
Death of a clown is one of my all-time fav! Looks great!
hey sean p. thanks for the positive feedback on my mix- i was a little apprehensive about the whole thing. But red scarf stopped me on the street yesterday and told me he was going to make a mix for me in return... so i guess he liked it ;]
What about Mick Avory, one of the best rock drummers ever! I think he's the soul of the band, but then again, I'm a drummer...Oh, yeah, great mix!
I agree entirely, though Dave seems to think that his tempos varied wildly in concert.
"Milk Cow Blues" is a cover but one of my favourites. "Strangers," however, has to be Dave's best song. There is so much emotion in that tune. Wow.
Nice to hear Dave's back on the beat - a trouper! Love 'Party Line' and 'Death of a Clown'. Proved the the younger Davies brother could lay songs down a bit too. Fascinating mix.
