Clash Covers - The World of The Clash
Comment:
Synth to six-string, acoustic to electric, eclectic is the common — and loosely woven — thread connecting these Clash cover artists. While the Clash hammered home "Clampdown" with snare smashes and guitar slashes, the Indigo Girls ripped its plugs out of their sockets and let Amy Ray's gravel-voiced delivery do the heavy lifting, camouflaging the tune's rabble-rousing lyric in a deceptively sweet-sounding acoustic setting. The Afghan Whigs, meanwhile, transform the anti-consumerist anthem "Lost in the Supermarket" into a working stiff's low-grade nightmare of confusion and insignificance. And Annie Lennox ratchets up the danceability of "Train in Vain" by tossing out half the lyrics, extending the tune by a minute-and-a-half, and pumping in a steroid-juiced bass line under a funky gospel vocal. But don't stop exploring there; artists from Mack 10 (featuring Ice Cube) to Silverchair have raided the Clash’s overflowing musical arsenal.
