Comment:

From Berkeley, California, to Britain’s Bethnal Green, for two decades bands have modeled their sound on the Clash’s magnetic mix of ideology, individuality, and innovation. Green Day, with rabble-rousing ringleader Billie Joe Armstrong leading the charge, rips a page from "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A." and launches into a homegrown kick to the breadbasket with "American Idiot." Less flippant is Rage Against the Machine’s ferocious "Killing in the Name"; like a corkscrew twisting slowly into your ear, singer Zach de La Rocha repeats the phrase “Now you do what they told ya” until he finally explodes in an f-bomb-loaded primal scream of defiance. And with Pete Doherty wailing on his guitar like a schoolyard bully extorting lunch money, the Libertines team with Mick Jones behind the boards, remixing the somewhat ominous "Don't Look Back into the Sun" on the band’s farewell EP.
