Many of Newman's finest pieces are attached to complex, mature, and disturbing ideas and images: his score for [i]The Good German[/i] (title theme included here), an homage to noir, brilliantly navigates twisted paths of tone and tension, while a composition like "Horse" — from the 1991 Gulf War movie [i]Jarhead[/i] — expertly cranks up the electronic intensity to the crushing levels demanded by its subject.
