Comment:
Our trio of focus selections from Deep Cuts spans nearly the entire 20th century, but they share an evocative after-hours aura. Polish composer Karol Szymanowski's haunting "Notturno e Tarantella Op. 28 Numéro 1," featuring Bernard Zinck on violin and David Selig on piano, contains brooding echoes of Richard Strauss, even Wagner, with a slightly dissonant twist. Written just over a decade later, Gustav Holst's "A Moorside Suite: Nocturne (1928)" was originally commissioned for the BBC and the National Brass Band Festival Committee, but it's performed here by Eugene Migliaro Corporan & North Texas Wind Symphony with an almost pastoral tranquility. And Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, better known for his guitar-oriented works, closes out the evening with a serene and meditative piano composition, "Tres Evocaciones: II. Noche en el Guadalquivir," performed by Gregory Allen.
