Joy Division
Comment:
Arguably the greatest post-punk band of them all, Joy Division glowered out of Manchester in the late '70s on a cumulative wave of affecting melancholy, electronic innovation (largely thanks to visionary producer Martin Hannett), and coiled-spring energy, the likes of which had never been heard before. The suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis, whose epilepsy added genuine tension to his intense electro-shock stage performances, brought the band its early dissolution (the nucleus would reform as New Order). We've based this salute on their two official album releases (Unknown Pleasures and Closer), and we've added the early punk-leaning track "Warsaw" and a live version of "Sister Ray".
