Elvis Costello Collaborations - World of Elvis Costello
Comment:
Given his fierce independence, you might expect Elvis would have trouble sharing the spotlight . . . and you’d be wrong. Fact is, in the presence of other pop powerhouses, he’s inspired to even greater heights. Burt Bacharach's trademark hushed horn section and elegant art-song melody for "God Give Me Strength" meshes exquisitely with Elvis' razor-sharp lyric in a perfectly balanced yin and yang of bitter and sweet. But when country legend George Jones and Elvis swap vocals on Costello's "Stranger in the House," it's all about the salt — the lonesome cry of a pedal steel and the honky-tonk tears of a love gone bad. And the heartrending love-triangle duet with Paul McCartney on "You Want Her Too" is the acid-etched mirror image of McCartney's cotton candy-sweet "The Girl Is Mine." Don’t stop there, though; we’ve got Elvis coupled with some amazing — and rather unlikely — partners.
