Comment:

Like a force of nature, Elvis swept through pop music in a relentless quest for others’ tunes worthy of his attention, in the process altering more people’s record collections than a roomful of disc jockeys. He covers the Animals’ "Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood" like a mournful cloud, the drums pounding heavy behind his every phrase, hammering home the lyric and the burden he’s forced to bear. He transforms “Hot Burrito, No. 1,” the Gram Parsons-penned country-rock tearjerker, into a tender display of vulnerability on Almost Blue, renaming it "I'm Your Toy." And he ignites the afterburner under "I Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down," Sam & Dave’s gravel road soul scorcher, reinventing it as a hypersonic new wave rave up. As you probe deeper, you'll be amazed at Costello’s ability to stamp his identity on virtually any page of the pop songbook.
