Elvis pioneered a new species of hyper-literate singer-songwriter who kicked over cultural and stylistic barriers on a pilgrimage to his/her music's emotional core — although Costello's eclectic scope remains unmatched. Aimee Mann's "Momentum," originally recorded for the movie [i]Magnolia[/i], blends a cabinetful of ingredients into a goulash that she serves up in a big band/rock/jazz no-man's land where Bertolt Brecht rocks out to Elvis' "Sneaky Feelings." Ron Sexsmith's stripped-down arrangement on "Secret Heart" opens up an emotionally naked space, exposing every nerve ending in the process. And Billy Bragg brings a scruffy-necked working-class attitude to the familiar journey from lust to letdown in "Greetings to the New Brunette," his acid tongue echoing the cynicism of Costello's "This Year's Girl."
