Comment:
John Cale is one of the most famous and, in his own way, influential underground rock musicians, he is also one of the hardest to pin down stylistically. Cale may be better remembered for his work in the Velvet Underground, and as a producer, than for his own large discography. He is without question one of the most influential producers of pre-punk, punk, and new wave, overseeing important recordings by the Stooges, Nico, Patti Smith, the Modern Lovers, and Squeeze. Even at his most accessible, his music has a moody, even morbid edge that precludes much radio airplay. Even at its most experimental, it was never as avant-garde. On his own, he is more concerned with crafting songs, delivered in his lilting if thin Welsh voice, and inventively arranged. It is in his arrangements that his musical training and avant-garde background were most evident.
Feedback:
great
yes. this is good, Tom
Cool. I haven't heard it in a long time, but I love "Hedda Gabler."
Super duper fitting tribute. It's a shame that his own seminal work in VU overshadows his solo career. But I guess I'm guilty of knowing the VU stuff more as well.
Great mix, Tom, although I feel saddened by the lack of "Half Past France"... not that there are any questionable choices here, but it's just one of my favorite songs of all-time by *anyone*.
Half Past France, Gun, Strange Times in Casablanca...The list goes on. As you are quite aware, you try to give an overview and you could easliy get stuck on one record filling up a disc. Thus things getledt behind or you can always make a part II.
Great stuff, once again.
