If your introduction to Don McLean's eight-and-a-half minute pop epic "American Pie" came courtesy of Madonna's cover, it's time to go back to the source and meet the man who — inspired and moved by the death of Buddy Holly — penned a classic. The elegiac folkster also wrote a track in honour of artist Van Gogh ("Vincent") and was even the subject of a tribute himself (Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly with His Song").
