Coming across the music of Joanna Newsom for the first time is, by turns, as delightful, rich, and bewildering as watching films by legendary stop-motion animators like the Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmajer: craft, skill, and attention to intricate detail all seem to burst from the confines of the medium and occupy a permanent space in the imagination. Newsom is a classically trained harpist who incorporates modernist, African, and Appalachian elements into a musical forest, through which her incredible elfin voice weaves an unpredictable path.
