Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
Comment:
They call Sharon Jones "Soul Sister #1," and her straight-outta-Stax shout lets you know that, no, she ain't interested in polite conversation. Hotter than a juke-joint Saturday night, Jones & The Dap-Kings are all about old-school soul and rumble-seat funk, shot through with slicing six-string, percolating bass, and bloodletting horns. Jones grew up in the church, and her fire-up-the-congregation phrasing on "When the Other Foot Drops, Uncle" makes the hair on the back of our necks stand up and give thanks. On "How Do I Let a Good Man Down?," from 2005's mightily recommended Naturally, Jones channels the great '60s R&B divas. Meantime, the Dap-Kings — a Bar-Kays-tight unit that served as Amy Winehouse's backing band — grease the tracks with yearnin', burnin' goodness, sending Ms. Jones careening on a runaway train with "Got a Thing on My Mind." In a world of pretenders, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are the real deal.
