If you’re a Springsteen fanatic, you probably know most of these folks, and if you’re a fan, you’ll definitely want to hear them. From hyper-literate singer-songwriters to sawdust-kicking bar-band offspring to sometime-Springsteen sidemen, Bruce’s sound washes over these artists like waves on the Jersey shore. Southside Johnny slinks around the rough edges of Springsteen’s sultry blues “The Fever” like an alley cat prowling on a moonlit Jersey night. In “Across the Tracks,” E-Streeter Nils Lofgren crafts the kind of three-minute, star-crossed-lover mini-drama sorely missing from rock since the death of AM radio. And you can almost see the neon glare of Spanish Harlem’s bodegas receding in the rearview mirror as a spellbound Tom Waits motors to the arms of his “Jersey Girl.” And as you’ll soon discover, you don’t have to have a Garden State driver’s license to sound like Bruce — fact is, you don’t even have to be a [i]guy[/i].
