Comment:
With his leather jacket, 501s, and week’s worth of stubble, Bruce de-wussified the singer-songwriter, proving you don’t have to plug in to rock out — and when you do plug in, you don’t have to leave your emotions backstage. Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” cuts across the landscape between Nebraska and the Jersey Turnpike, where a white trash bootlegger ducks the federales like one of Springsteen’s Sinaloa cowboys. Melissa Etheridge’s shredded-heart rocker “No Souvenirs” harks back to Bruce’s plain-dealing storytelling, where the road offers redemption for the broken souls of lovers gone astray. And in the Hold Steady’s “Stuck Between Stations,” fuzz-bomb power chords evaporate into a piano riff straight out of “Born to Run” as vocalist Craig Finn paints a chilling Midwestern portrait of trampled expectations and a poet’s suicide. Not enough? Try roots rocker John Eddie, alt-country fave Ryan Adams, and more — all baptized in waters drawn from Bruce’s wellspring.
