Comment:

Our Second Set opens with a puzzle: Why Bruce’s studio version of “Because the Night” remains unreleased is one of rock’s true mysteries, since his live version (with the original lyrics) segues seamlessly with the Darkness-era’s other album tracks, many of which are featured here. With its pedal steel swooping and mesquite metaphors, “Long Time Comin’” is light years removed from the Jersey shore, but its singer could just as easily be from Newark as New Mexico — another third-time dad promising to get it right this time . . . finally. And just like Noah building the ark, Bruce carries out a mission from God in “Land of Hope and Dreams,” loading a train with saints and sinners, transporting them — and transforming them — on a one-way rock ’n’ roll journey from the dark night of the soul on to the Promised Land.
