Comment:

When Shane MacGowan sang on the mid-tempo-but-manic Dropkick Murphys song "Wild Rover and Good Rats," the longtime Pogues leader essentially passed his pint glass to the young Bostonians. Much like the Pogues at their prime, the Murphys have seamlessly connected the contrasting chords of Celtic folk and Clash-schooled punk rock for more than a decade — all without losing an inch of street cred — from the hectic hardcore punk of Do or Die and the sound-expanding experiments of The Gang's All Here (a bagpipe/guitar rendition of "Amazing Grace," the military march masquerade of "The Fighting 69th") to their increasingly popular trio of recent records, Blackout, The Warrior's Code, and The Meanest of Times. And to think, it all started with barbershop basement practices — sessions that blended traditional Irish tracks and Oi! punk without realizing just how brilliant the pairing was.
