There are places on the planet where, secluded from the rest of the world, a spontaneous combination of timing and environment produce something rare and wonderful. Nearly a century ago, one of those places lay between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers, a flood plain known as the Mississippi Delta. There, in a place marked by some of the richest soil in the world, and some of the poorest folk in the country, musicians like Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Son House, Fred McDowell, and Charlie Patton started playing their guitars with slashing, sliding, rhythmic power and singing with the voice of pure, uncut emotion.
