Comment:

Here's one that may prove bewildering to practically every single person at AOTM. "Forbidden Broadway" is an off-Broadway revue that's run for 20 years, mocking the shows, trends and personalities of Broadway with ruthlessly brilliant comic lyrics set to great show tunes and sung by fiendish vocal impersonators. To fully appreciate this, you need a deep knowledge of the Broadway songbook of the last 50 years and an easy familiarity with the contemporary theatre scene. Mandy Patinkin's over-the-top rendition of "Over the Rainbow" is mocked as "Somewhat Overindulgent," with a devastating, spot-on vocal parody. Elaine Stritch's showstopper from "Company," "The Ladies Who Lunch," becomes a paean to vocally pushy stars in "The Ladies Who Screech." Stephen Sondheim's "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" (a/k/a Buddy's Blues) from "Follies" sends up the composer's current trouble getting a show on the boards as "The Everybody-Loves-Me-But-Nobody-Will-Produce-Me Blues." Okay, this is extremely specialized stuff and I wondered if there's a point to posting it. Well, this mixes the best of the eight cast recordings, made for some of my theatre queen friends (I use that term gender- and orientation-neutrally). Simply, this tape is a scream. It reminds me of the Tom Lehrer and Allan Sherman records I grew up on. Deathless melodies, incisive lyrics, brilliant performances...what more do you need?

I honestly wish I had heard these songs. It seems like something I would love.

This looks fabulous. I absolutely love cruel Mandy Patinkin impersonations and would love to get a copy of this if I may. Interested in another trade Eric?
