Comment:

Just as Aretha came into her own, a stage of other full-cry singers stepped forward to deliver secular sermons that sound fresher today than when they washed over the counterculture congregation 40 years ago. Etta James grabs us by our collective throat with her soul-soft shoulder-to-cry-on “Tell Mama.” Cue it up and press play — she’s about to convert you to the Church of the Full-Tilt Boogie. Another pop preacher, Wilson Pickett, prowls like a panther, and his “I’m in Love” cuts through your brain like a buzz saw, an electric jolt of pure sexual energy. (Yes, that is, in fact, steam rising off your iPod.) Which says nothing of the heat coming off “Good to Me,” where Irma Thomas, going for rock-bottom broke, reaches out and touches you in all the right places. From Gladys to Janis, from “Clean Up Woman” to “Woman to Woman,” we’ve got the songs to get you through the storm.
