Hilary Duff
Comment:
It all started with a little television show called Lizzie McGuire, a Disney Channel staple that lasted 65 episodes before a successful film spin-off — the soundtrack of which featured Hilary Duff's first official single, the deceptively simple seize-the-day anthem "Why Not?" Duff didn't stay in character for too long, though; much like its title suggests, Metamorphosis revealed a Matrix-assisted rock side to her bubblegum pop (see the euphoric choruses of "Come Clean") persona , from the teeth-gnashing drums of "So Yesterday" to the guitar-grinding gallop of "The Math." She's struck a perfect balance between Avril and Britney ever since, including a Blondie-or-bust collaboration with Good Charlotte's Madden brothers ("Wake Up"), faithful covers of the Go-Gos ("Our Lips Are Sealed") and Madonna (the thumping Timbaland production of "Material Girl"), and a recent plunge into rainbow-chasing electro-pop (Dignity).
