Roots of Punk - School of Rock: Punk
Comment:
Burned out and bored with rock's behemothness, the class of '77 turned over record store bins and tore into Trouser Press in a pop culture dig for rock's primordial swag. In Roxy Music's genre-bending "Virginia Plain," Andy Warhol and Ray Davies rendezvous with the Spiders From Mars halfway between the salon and the stage. Is it glam? Proto-punk? Art rock with a psychedelic twist? We compile, you decide. Suzi Quatro packs her skin-tight catsuit with bubblegum, metal, glam, and 98 pounds of bass-slashing machismo in "48 Crash." And the Seeds' "Pushin' Too Hard," plucked from history's dustbin by producer Lenny Kaye on his classic Nuggets compilation, grinds its two simple chords into a ferocious, throat-shredding monument to primal rock 'n' roll. Punk's tangled roots snake across decades and continents, but we've got 'em — from Ann Arbor's Stooges to Andover's Troggs — right here.
