The English Beat
Comment:
Like so many groundbreaking bands, the English Beat wasn’t built to last. After three albums they literally split, dividing up into Fine Young Cannibals and General Public. Both bands pursued a poppier direction, with an R&B twist whose roots can be heard in the final Beat album’s pulsing, Motown-motivated “Sole Salvation.” Former Beat frontmen Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger scored in ’84 with the smooth-but-snappy bounce of General Public’s “Tenderness,” while ex-Beats Andy Cox and David Steele recruited soul-powered singer Roland Gift and soared to #1 with the postmodern R&B of both “Good Thing” and “She Drives Me Crazy.”
