The English Beat
Comment:
As the ’70s drew to a close and the world was ready to move to a new groove, the English Beat was one of the first bands to shake up an intoxicating cocktail of ska beats, punk energy, and more hooks than a coat rack. From the anti-Thatcherism of “Stand Down Margaret” to the racial-unity statement “Doors of Your Heart,” they were fiercely political but always kept an eye towards the dance floor. Greater commercial success came after the band splintered into Fine Young Cannibals and General Public, but generations of ska-rockers, from Rancid to No Doubt, owe their skanking souls to the English Beat. Hell, even Pete Townshend covered “Save It for Later.” Now you can do the twist-and-crawl along to the most crucial batch of Beat-related cuts ever assembled.
