Comment:

Like a musical version of the Garbage Pail Kids, new wave’s one-hit wonders devoured their entire 15 minutes of fame in less than four . . . before disappearing in a flash of Day-Glo brilliance. If any song were custom-made for pogoing, it’s the Vapors’ herky-jerky “Turning Japanese,” a bento box stuffed with Asian-accented guitars and spiky rhythms that caroms along with all the spastic energy the lyrics might suggest. Combining Pat Benatar’s dangerous, leather-jacketed heat with Colonel Klink’s sonic-aphrodisiac lilt, German pop star Nena offers an icy, synth-slathered vision of cold war apocalypso, “99 Luftballons” (later re-recorded in English as “99 Red Balloons”). And the Buggles’ futuristic bubblegum prophecy “Video Killed the Radio Star” packs a message no artist, whether axe-toting hair farmer or skinny-tied pop singer, dared ignore. Wanna dig deeper? A single mouse click will unlock the sexy strut of the Waitresses’ “I Know What Boys Like,” Taco’s reimagining of the half-century-old “Puttin’ On the Ritz,” and more.
