Comment:

Maybe no one could have suspected the genius that would blossom when a six-year-old named Oscar Peterson started piano lessons in his native Montreal, but it wasn't long before the world got clued in. Playing live on radio by the time he was 14, Peterson began recording regularly only a few years later, introducing the world to his peerless technique, breathtaking speed, and an instinct for improv that soon cemented his status as one of the finest pianists to ever address the black-and-whites. We bring you the best of Peterson's decades in jazz, from the signature standouts — the standard-setting "Falling in Love with Love," the solo supremacy of "Little Girl Blue" — to the lesser-known highlights of a catalog more than 60 years in the making, including a left-field foray into the clavichord that is "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York" and the twinkling tinklings of a bluesy "Stella by Starlight." Peterson died in late 2007 at 82, but with our Oscar Peterson Essentials, his music lives on and on.
