A casual listen to these introductory tracks seems, simply, to reveal the impressive skills of a blues-inspired folk guitarist . . . and so it does, but listen a little closer and it becomes clear that John Fahey — iconoclast, maverick, "American primitive" — was far more than that. Ease into our selection from his incredible catalogue with a gently paced track (like "Steamboat Gwine 'Round de Bend" from 1972's [i]Of Rivers and Religion[/i]) before exploring further.
