Like the preacher he became, Al Green builds “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” like a sermon, luring you in with a whisper-quiet intro before delivering the emotional body blow of [i]“How can a loser ever win?”[/i] as his all-girl gospel backup singers plead with the congregation to [i]help the man[/i] rebuild his shattered dream.
