Early Bee Gees Discoveries - The World of Bee Gees
Comment:
Bee Gees commandeered the British Invasion’s last boat to the States for their grab at the brass ring (and the gold record) back when the word disco still had its -theque attached. From their debut album’s opener, “Turn of the Century,” the group pushes the boundaries of traditional pop, as its horn section punches in with surgical precision and oboes croon in pinky-finger-extended elegance. “In My Own Time” bridges the gap between Merseybeat and Melbourne with its crisply clipped syllables and rave-up garage guitars. And for an idea of just how good the young trio was, cue up “Ring My Bell,” two exquisitely crafted minutes of pop perfection that — from yet another time when they could do no wrong — remained buried in the vault for nearly 40 years. We’ve unearthed these unfairly neglected tracks, and a whole lot more, from a chapter of Bee Gees’ history long obscured by the blinding flash of disco’s mirrored ball.
