Comment:
Because the Gibbs' various careers span four decades (and even more styles), our Similar Sounds songs bear only the faintest resemblance to one another, even though they all sound like Bee Gees. In the lighter-than-air psych-pop of 1967's "Carrie Anne," the Hollies' Graham Nash plucks notes out of the stratosphere, stacking them on top of harmonies so tight they seem spot-welded. ABBA's "Dancing Queen" distills disco's twinkling lights, twittering strings, and twirling ladies into four minutes of uninhibited Eurojoy. And a 30-piece string section cradles Jeff Lynne's heartsick vocals like a velveteen hammock in "Can't Get It Out Of My Head," a down-tempo ballad of unrequited love from Electric Light Orchestra's breakthrough album, Eldorado. As you explore further, you'll realize that our Similar Sounds assembles its portrait like a mosaic — each piece, from Elton John to Donna Summer, represents only the tiniest fraction of a very complex Bee Gees picture.
