Comment:
When Ginuwine first showed up at our door — way back in 1996, mind you — with a dozen red roses, a freshly popped bottle of bub, and a smile that’d melt the coldest of hearts, love wasn’t the only thing on his mind. The smoothed-out singer was also trying to seal the deal on the future of R&B itself, starting with such Timbaland-backed smashes as the guitar-laced “Same Ol’ G” and the drum-choppin’ “What’s So Different?” Listen closely and you might just spot a Monkees nod in the latter, a glaring example of how Ginuwine records skip the typical quiet-storm route for a torrential downpour of speaker-slammin’, heart-sinking hip-hop soul. Let’s just say his saddle’s always waiting, whether that means a ballad as slow-burning as “Differences” or a track as tense and tight as “Last Chance.”
