Jerry Goldsmith
Comment:
Composer Henry Mancini noted that Jerry Goldsmith's skill-set scared the hell out of his peers; John Williams, meanwhile, referred to Goldsmith's "chameleon adaptability," and the fact that he would take on any instrument, no matter how obscure, to satisfy his listener as richly as possible. Consider his score for 1995's Congo (from which the tracks "Deep Jungle" and "Gates of Zinj" are taken), which adapted tribal chants and African drums to make us feel as if we'd been dropped into damp, dark, and dangerous jungles (talking gorilla not included). And on the small screen, he delivered everything from The Waltons theme to that soul-stirring ode to human nobility in space, "Star Trek: Voyager."
