Comment:

Jerry Goldsmith was a titan in a field that leans toward anonymity. Composers slave over splotches of ink across endless lines on paper that are incomprehensible to most who hear the final product, yet they rarely receive the credit they deserve. We walked away from Poltergeist scared out of our wits, but if Goldsmith were one step off with his score, the movie would have fallen apart. Sure, he won an Oscar® and four Emmys®, but by evoking everything from the past to the future — from The Blue Max to Total Recall — his output should be recognized for complementing, and enhancing, the extraordinary images he worked with. Jerry Goldsmith disliked the term "film composer" and he wasn't one; as you're about to hear, he was a "composer" of the first degree. Fact is, he was among the 20th century's very finest.
